Care & Framing Guide

Handmade art lasts for generations with a little care. Here's how to unpack, frame, display and look after your piece.

Unpacking

  • Record a short unboxing video. If anything was damaged in transit, it makes a claim quick and easy.
  • Open the parcel on a clean, flat surface. Cut tape carefully so blades don’t touch the artwork.
  • Rolled paintings: unroll slowly, paint side up, and let the painting relax flat for a day or two. Place clean paper and a few books on the corners, never directly on the paint.
  • Handle paintings by the edges. Oils and moisture from fingers can mark the surface.

Framing a painting

Paintings on canvas

  • Stretched on a frame (gallery wrap): ready to hang as is, or add a simple floating frame for a finished look.
  • Rolled canvas: take it to a local framer to be stretched onto wooden stretcher bars first. Ask for a little extra canvas to be left for wrapping round the edges.
  • Canvas paintings don’t need glass. Let the surface breathe.

Paintings on paper

  • Frame them behind glass or acrylic, with a mount (mat) so the painting doesn’t touch the glass.
  • Ask your framer for acid-free mounts and backing, which stop the paper yellowing over time.
  • UV-protective glass is worth it if the piece will hang in a bright room.

Choosing a frame

Natural wood suits earthy folk styles such as Warli and Madhubani. A thin black or white frame keeps contemporary pieces clean. Gold or ornate frames bring out devotional art. When in doubt, pick a frame that’s simpler than the painting.

Hanging and display

  • Keep out of direct sunlight. Sunlight fades natural and watercolour pigments fastest.
  • Avoid damp walls, bathrooms, and spots directly above radiators, heaters, stoves or AC vents.
  • Hang the centre of the artwork at about eye level, roughly 145–150 cm from the floor.
  • Use two hooks for wider pieces so they stay level, and check that the wall fixing suits the weight.

Everyday care for paintings

  • Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth every few weeks.
  • Never use water, sprays or cleaning products on the painted surface.
  • For stains or damage, contact us before trying to fix it. We can advise or put you in touch with a restorer.

Resin pieces and nameplates

  • Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry. Don’t use glass cleaner, alcohol or abrasive pads, which dull the gloss and mirror lettering.
  • Nameplates are best in covered spots, such as a porch, a corridor or beside the door under a shade. Long hours of direct sun and rain can yellow resin and loosen stones over time.
  • Mount with the screws or strong double-sided mounting tape suited to your wall. For heavier pieces, use screws.
  • Keep resin items away from high heat, such as stovetops or hot dashboards, which can soften or warp them.
